Basic Soil Mechanics Related to Earth Dams

The objective of this course will be to provide a comprehensive presentation of the significant principles and concepts of soil mechanics to the participants. The material will be presented with emphasis on the basic soil mechanics principles prerequisite to further study for design or rehabilitation of earth embankment dams. This is a basic level course intended as an introduction for those with minimal to moderate knowledge or experience in the application of soil mechanics principles to earth dam design, operation and rehabilitation. This course is a good prerequisite to the more advanced ASDSO seminars on: Stability Analysis of Embankment Dams, and Seepage Through Earth Dams.

Key learning objectives attendees will receive from this course:

  • The significant basic concepts and principles of soil mechanics prerequisite to further courses related to the use of soil mechanics principles for earth embankment design and rehabilitation.
  • The theory of consolidation related to embankment dam engineering
  • The concepts of soil shear strength related to embankment dam engineering
  • The concepts of lateral earth pressure needed for hydraulic structure applications
  • A basic understanding of phreatic surface, embankment permeability, and drainage systems
  • Appropriate field investigation techniques needed to evaluate foundation conditions for design and rehabilitation of embankment dams
  • Appropriate field and insitu testing procedures for existing or new embankment dams

Cancellation Policy:

  • A $75 cancellation fee applies to all cancellations received on or before May 27. After May 27 no refunds will be given.

PDHs Available:

  • 17 PDHs are available for the completion of the course. NY licensed engineers are elegible to recieve up-to 17 PDHs for the completion of the course.

No ASDSO group blocks have been reserved for this event, however, we are able to offer a “Student Housing” option for interested attendees.

Student housing will include overnight accommodations in a nearby dorm facility on campus. Each reservation will be for a 2-bedroom suite. The suite includes 2 bedrooms with full XL beds, bathroom, kitchenette, mini refrigerator and freezer, and microwave. Linens are included, but there is not daily housekeeping. If fresh towels are required, they can be requested at the front desk lobby. The daily rate for student housing is $80 per day. To make a reservation for student housing, you must select each night when registering and pay in advance. Reservation cancellations are subject to a $10 cancellation fee per night if requested prior to May 27, 2019. After May 27, 2019 housing reservation fees are non-refundable.

Final details on rooming assignments will not be available until closer to the event dates. You will be contacted with your rooming location, check in times, and all additional details no later than Friday, May 31, 2019.
