Inspection and Assessment of Florida Dams, October 26-27, 2017 is hosted by the Florida DEP and the Assocation of State Dam Safety Officials (ASDSO). 

The event is located at IFAS Agricultural Research and Education Center, 2199 South Rock Road, Fort Pierce, FL, 34945. 

This course provides instruction in inspection and evaluation techniques for dams. The principles, concepts and procedures taught will be readily adaptable to any organization conducting dam inspections and evaluating their compliance with current design standards. The target audience is state regulators, dam owners/operators, consulting engineers and personnel responsible for the operation and maintenance of dams. Participants learn about a variety of dam types and their appurtenances, the function of typical dam features, and common dam failure modes and the conditions that can lead to these failure modes. Actual dam failure cases will be presented. Public safety, security, and liability will also be discussed along with approaches to responding to dam incidents.

Students will learn about:

  • Historical perspective of dam construction methods for various dam types
  • Common failure modes associated with various dam types
  • Understanding of standards for maintaining dams
  • Techniques for performing a comprehensive dam inspection
  • Awareness of emerging issues related to inspection and assessment of dams

This is a BASIC LEVEL seminar. There are no specific education or experience prerequisites for this course, although some knowledge/experience in dam engineering and dam safety would be beneficial. Some advanced geotechnical concepts will be presented.

Attendees will receive presentation and reference materials that will aid in both implementing lessons learned in the seminar. A DVD or thumb drive will be provided to participants that will include PDF files of all the presentations at the course as well as other material developed for the course. The thumb drive or DVD will also contain a variety of technical papers pertinent to the topic material. A course workbook and the native PowerPoint presentations will not be provided.

ASDSO is registered with the Florida Board of Professional Engineers as a continuing education provider. Attendees will earn up to ten (10) professional development hours (PDHs) for attending the full seminar. You must complete the attendance sheet at the start and end of each day that you attend. Attendee certificates for PDH's will be provided on-site to those attendees with pre-paid registrations (Day 1 certificate = 6.5 hrs. Day 2 certificate = 3.5 hrs). There is no additional charge for the optional field trip on Day 2 but only those who attend will receive the second certificate for 3.5 PDH's.
